How to Blush

Tips from our beauty experts

Blush can brighten your entire complexion in just a few swipes. Our beauty experts share their knowledge on formula types, how to select the perfect shade and where exactly to apply based on the shape of your face, to help you perfect your blush.

  • Cream Blush

Cream blushes go on smooth and blend seamlessly with the natural warmth of your skin. They also provide a boost of hydration, making them a perfect choice for drier complexions.

How to Apply Using your fingers, dab a small amount directly onto the apples of your cheeks and blend.

    Expert Tip

Cream blushes are ideal for mature skin because they don’t fold into lines or creases.

  • Powder Blush

Powder blush absorbs moisture, making it a great option for oily complexions. It goes on smooth and leaves a matte finish.

How to Apply Apply using smooth strokes along the apples of the cheeks, brushing towards the temples.

    Expert Tip

Use a makeup primer to give the blush something to cling to if you're applying to bare skin.

  • Niche Blushes

Other blush formulas include liquids and gels, which are great for giving a natural-looking flush since they are lightweight and easy to build.

How to Apply Using your fingers swipe lightly from the apples of your cheeks up toward the hairline. To build intensity, continue to layer.

    Expert Tip

Dab any excess product on your fingers onto your eyelids, blending upwards towards the brow, stopping right above the natural crease.

Tips for choosing a shade

The right blush will complement your complexion and mimic your skin's natural flush.

Fair Complexions Medium Complexions Olive Complexions Deep Complexions

Deeper complexions can wear highly pigmented shades, so dare to go bright and bold or deep and sultry.

Tips for where to apply

Blush should flatter your bone structure when applied strategically to your unique face shape.

  • Heart Shaped / Triangular

Heart or triangular shaped faces tend to have a broader forehead, pronounced cheekbones and a narrow jaw. To balance the width of the forehead and to soften the cheekbones, brush your blush on the bottom of your cheekbone (where you’d usually contour) and extend upwards towards your ears.

  • Long

Long shaped faces are slender and longer than they are wide. To add width, apply blush to the apples of your cheeks and sweep it horizontally outwards towards your ears.

  • Oval

Oval faces tend to have prominent, rounded cheeks with equal width and length of the face. Place the color just above the top of the cheekbones to help raise the appearance of your cheeks and blend up towards the temple.

  • Round

Round faces are equal in width and length, so it’s important to emphasize your bone structure. Sweep your blush from the ear down the center of your cheekbones towards the mouth. Add a little touch of blush to the chin and blend it well to make your face appear longer.

  • Square

A square face shape has cheekbones that are the same width as the chin. To help define your cheeks, apply your blush slightly below the cheekbone and then blend outwards for a softer look.
