How To Self-Tan

Getting beautiful beach-bronzed color doesn't mean you have to spend every weekend poolside or traveling to the shore! Follow our expert guide to get your best sunless tan, from start to finish no matter the season.

Prepare in advance

It's important to complete all your beautifying steps like shaving, waxing, manicures and hair treatments before you start your self-tanning process since many of the the ingredients found in these steps can affect your tanning results.

Exfoliate your body

By exfoliating from head-to-toe, you remove dead skin and create a smooth, even surface so your self-tanning products will apply evenly without blotching or smearing.

Choose your self-tanning product

Self tanners come in many forms, see which option is right for you!

Shop Self Tanners

Choose a product based on your skin tone, not your desired level of tan. Light skin tones should choose a light color even if you want a deep tan.

Take your time

After applying, make sure to give the product plenty of time to dry on your skin. If in doubt, double the amount of time suggested on the container.

Don't skimp

Even if your desired color is light and subtle, make sure you cover your skin liberally to ensure you don't miss a spot.

Start from your toes and work your way up

Avoid crease lines on your stomach from bending over by applying to feet first, working your way up to your face and finishing with your hands.

Use a mitt

If you're applying a lotion or gel, wear a mitt to eliminate the risk of extra color on your hands and nails.

Touch up

If streaks or splotches appear after you've finished applying, rub half a lemon on the area for two minutes then lightly buff with a damp towel.

Make it last

Prolong your tan by avoiding exfoliating products, retinols and acne treatments as they can fade the color. Instead, use gentle cleansers and when you’re ready to refresh your skin's glow, exfoliate and start again.

Don't Forget SPF!

The color produced by the sunless tanning product won't protect your skin from UV rays. If you spend time outdoors, make sure to apply sunscreen over your self tan.
