#ShowUsYourBag

What’s currently in your bag that makes it clear, “This belongs to Chanté?”

A lot of brightly colored liquid liner. So much. I’m having fun exploring colorful makeup, and I love painting. So this discovery of using colorful liquid eyeliner has been really expressive and fun for me.

Are you also doing a bold lip to match?

Actually, I’ve just been using tinted lip balm and having fun playing with just a subtle color, not like a—Bam, I'm here! Especially because my eyes are so pop-y now, everything else has got to be a little bit more subdued to make those even stronger.

Have you always been super into makeup?

Honestly, not particularly, because I've not really used makeup a lot in my life. I've gone with almost no makeup ever—maybe a tiny bit of foundation, like a tiny, tiny bit. And these last few months have been a whole revelation for me of like, “Oh, I can play. I can make my appearance any way I want it to be.” Right now, it’s the liquid eyeliner, but I think this is just the first frontier of a whole new world for me.

Where do you find your confidence?
I find confidence in my identity. I feel like a bridge between a lot of different ways of being and identities—whether it's that I'm Black, white and Native American, or that I’m nonbinary and bisexual.

What’s one of your beauty essentials?
Witch hazel. It’s just revolutionized my skin in a really cool way. It tones and cleans. I don't really use soap on my face; I use that instead. I steam my face with a washcloth, then apply witch hazel, and it feels really good.
What do you like to use on your hair?
My hair is a whole other story. That has been a journey. I'm mixed, and my hair can really vary in how it wants to express. Sometimes it's sort of wavy, straight, almost beachy waves, and other times it's super curly and big. I'm learning how to manage the variety. I don't really use shampoo. My kind of hair is very, very dry, and I don't feel like I've had great experiences with shampoos. And, thankfully, having too much oil isn’t really a problem for me. Lately, I’ve only been using Olaplex No.5 conditioner. We're still feeling it out, but it feels like it’s helping my hair.
What’s your go-move for outdoor entertaining?
My biggest tip is: Tell everyone what to make and bring, because everyone’s going to bring a salad if you just tell them to bring whatever. Even though salads are really lovely in the summer, sometimes we need to have a little variety. So I say, plan the menu, tell people what to bring, and you’ll be better off.
So what do you end up bringing? A salad! I like a butter leaf salad with pomegranate seeds and some roasted squash. We’ve got a family recipe for a homemade dressing that is, honestly, deadly. You would love it; everyone loves it. And I can't tell you the ingredients, because it's a family secret.
