What’s always in your bag?

Arnica because I’m on a tennis court all day, and it’s a muscle relaxer. There’s a friend of mine—he’s kind of like a brother to me—and he’s always got the answer, literally. He’s like a modern-day shaman. He's like, “Arnica, man—put it on right now, don't waste any time.” So I got in the habit of using it, and it really works. Even though I’m enjoying being on the court all day, there’s no way I can hide that every day, I get older and older and older. I feel good, but I still have muscle aches. I started using arnica regularly, and it’s really helped me out.

What do you love about teaching tennis?

Ooh, there are so many things. First of all, I love teaching because I'm also learning. Every individual is different, so it’s a challenge. My youngest student is two and a half years-old. My oldest—I don’t even know how old my oldest would be right now. But ultimately, what I love about teaching tennis is when all the elements come together for my students. At some point, they have that moment of clarity when everything that seemed so overwhelming before becomes clear, and they make contact with the ball. And you just see that look on their face: They’re just overjoyed—and almost overwhelmed—with happiness that they finally did it. And now they can do this over and over again because it finally clicks. That’s one of those moments that really warms my heart.

Where do you find your confidence?
That’s just something that happens with age, I think. I’ve absolutely become more confident as I’ve gotten older. I feel like you make a decision to learn about exactly who you are. If you make that decision to learn who you are, then it’s a constant process. It’s also like being in school. If you understand why you make a decision, you understand more about yourself, and as you understand more about yourself, your confidence grows.
What’s your secret to healthy-looking skin?
I don’t do much, but I do drink vitamin C powder. That seems to work.

What are your favorite fragrance notes?
When we’re in fall, going into winter, I’m super into smoky, spicy, bark-type notes. All that kind of fiery stuff, I gravitate toward. That really turns me on.
Where do you find beauty, especially as a fashion photographer?
The thing is, I find beauty in everything, I really do. When it comes to fashion, you’re always surrounded by the most beautiful designs, the most beautiful people, so that’s easy. What’s important is getting regular people to understand that they’re beautiful, too. To do that, I have fun while I’m taking pictures. Hopefully that becomes contagious to the person I’m photographing, the idea that we’re just having fun. And that normally brings out the beauty in people.
