What’s always in your bag?
Arnica because I’m on a tennis court all day, and it’s a muscle relaxer. There’s a friend of mine—he’s kind of like a brother to me—and he’s always got the answer, literally. He’s like a modern-day shaman. He's like, “Arnica, man—put it on right now, don't waste any time.” So I got in the habit of using it, and it really works. Even though I’m enjoying being on the court all day, there’s no way I can hide that every day, I get older and older and older. I feel good, but I still have muscle aches. I started using arnica regularly, and it’s really helped me out.
What do you love about teaching tennis?
Ooh, there are so many things. First of all, I love teaching because I'm also learning. Every individual is different, so it’s a challenge. My youngest student is two and a half years-old. My oldest—I don’t even know how old my oldest would be right now. But ultimately, what I love about teaching tennis is when all the elements come together for my students. At some point, they have that moment of clarity when everything that seemed so overwhelming before becomes clear, and they make contact with the ball. And you just see that look on their face: They’re just overjoyed—and almost overwhelmed—with happiness that they finally did it. And now they can do this over and over again because it finally clicks. That’s one of those moments that really warms my heart.
