Tiffany ScottRóen
Róen co-founder Tiffany Thurston Scott decided to create her own collection of luxurious-but-clean eyeshadows after she realized that the ingredients found in some mainstream products might be to blame for her frequently irritated eyes. Launched in 2019, the cult-favorite brand now includes clean mascara, lipstick, skincare and more.
What drove you to start your own brand? The inspiration for Róen came from my obsession with luxe beauty products; I’m a huge fan of Chanel, Dior and many other gorgeous, iconic brands. I also have a passion for health and wellness that I developed growing up in Utah, where I was surrounded by beauty and nature and learned the importance of preserving the environment. When I moved to Los Angeles for my formal education, I fell in love with the glamour and beauty so prevalent in that culture, and that’s what inspired me to create a beauty line that was clean, luxe and glamorous—my favorite things!I had an “aha moment” that encouraged me to launch with eyeshadows after I kept getting irritations and styes in my eye, and my dermatologist deduced that it was the eye makeup I was using. This prompted me to research the actual ingredients in my eyeshadow, and I was appalled to learn how harmful they were. This realization was pivotal in my creation of the Róen palettes and also in my desire to create a truly clean mascara, our Cake version.
What’s your favorite product in the line? That’s a tough question to answer because I love them all so much. For a long time, it was our 75° palette—I love the effortless sparkle and versatility. Currently, I would say it’s our new palette Mood 4Ever; it has the versatile shades we’re known for, but we’ve added a matte shade and a little less sparkle to the overall palette.
What are your morning and evening routines?
The first thing I do when I wake up is make myself a glass of warm lemon water. I’m not a morning person, and lemon water helps wake me up and gets me going. It's also incredibly good for your system first thing in the morning. It’s detoxifying and is great for keeping your body alkaline, which is good for so many things—your heart, liver and kidneys. It’s even good for hormonal balance. If I don’t have early a.m. calls, I like to get my workout in. When I’m in Utah, I head out my back door for a hike (or skiing when the snow is good), and when I’m in LA, I do a hike or a yoga class.
My evenings are when I like to decompress from my busy workday, and for me that’s by cooking. I’m partial to the Mediterranean way of eating; I love choosing what’s in season. One of my favorite things to do on the weekends is to go to the farmers market and select what to make for dinner for the week.
I’m also a big believer in meditation, so I try to meditate at least once or twice a week. For me it's a way to manage my stress, but I also find it increases my self-awareness and creativity. What would people be surprised to learn about you? I'm a foodie, and as passionate as I am about clean beauty, I’m probably equally passionate about food and nutrition. I love cooking at home and also dining at new restaurants, especially when I travel. I adore different cultures and how they express themselves through food. What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting their own business? I think the best advice for any career path is to follow what you’re passionate about and be the best you can be. As a woman, I feel that I can accomplish just as much as a man (or more), as long as I don’t listen to all the noise and just let my passion drive me toward my goals. The most successful people are dedicated to their work and passionate about what they do. It always helps to have a little bit of luck and to be mindful of the life balance, but if you work hard and persevere, success will follow.
