Skin has long been a primary medium for the world-renowned tattoo artist Scott Campbell. A founder of the luxury cannabis brand Beboe, he launched Beboe Therapies in 2019, inspired by the growing body of research demonstrating the benefits of cannabis-derived cannabidiol, aka CBD, for skin.What drove you to start your own brand? I have had a relationship with cannabis for most of my life: The first time I ever heard of it was as an ingredient in the pot brownies that helped my mother get through the sleepless nights and nausea caused by chemotherapy. And as an artist, it has been a big part of my studio practice. So when the industry evolved and became legal, I knew that I wanted to be a part of it. I launched Beboe in 2015, followed by Beboe Therapies—the name was inspired by the love and compassion that my grandmother, Beboe, showed my mother and me while my mom was going through her cancer treatments. Tell us about the "aha moment" that led you to take the plunge and launch? As medical research uncovered more and more health benefits of cannabinoids, it became evident that cannabis is not only healthier way to let loose on a Friday night; it truly is a powerful medicine. And once the potential of CBD was discovered, it was also clear that there is a lack of awareness and education as far as how the compound actually works and how to best use it, especially when addressing inflammation, arthritis and skin issues. Beboe’s knowledge of the plant itself, combined with our relationship with some of the top cannabis researchers in the world, left us with a moral responsibility to apply our understanding of the plant to skincare products that were focused on efficacy first. Have you always been an entrepreneur? Well, I have never had to type up a resume.
